The Philadelphia Eagles have become a victim of their own success, as they’re being forced to get creative in an effort to defend their title.
Philadelphia lost several key members of its Super Bowl LIX-winning squad, with Milton Williams, Josh Sweat, Darius Slay, C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Isaiah Rodgers all finding new homes in the weeks following the victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
How can you replace that production? You can’t, but Eagles general manager Howie Roseman isn’t going to let that stop him from trying!
The Eagles reportedly agreed to terms with pass-rusher Joshua Uche on Thursday, and while that deal makes sense on a surface level, the details are absolutely insane. Uche’s deal is for just one season, and despite having a maximum value of under $3 million, Philadelphia was forced to add four void years to the end of the deal, according to NFL Media’s Mike Garofolo.

What is a void year?
The NFL allows teams to add them onto contracts to spread out signing bonuses and lower the annual salary cap hit, but the money is still owed and becomes dead money when the void year is reached. It’s essentially a form of salary cap gymnastics.
Uche, 26, isn’t exactly coming off the most prolific season, finishing with two total sacks in a campaign where he was traded from New England to Kansas City. The Patriots saw production dip significantly and shipped him away for insignificant draft capital.
Who knows, maybe the Eagles can fix him?
