The Patriots didn’t wait until the start of the NFL year to start wheeling and dealing.
New England on Monday morning agreed to trade Davon Godchaux to the New Orleans Saints, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Patriots acquired a 2026 seventh-round pick in exchange for the veteran defensive tackle, who reportedly was given permission in late February to seek a trade.
A 2017 fifth-round pick by the Dolphins, Godchaux joined the Patriots on a two-year deal in March 2021 after playing the first four seasons of his NFL career in Miami. The 30-year-old, who signed a two-year, $16.5 million extension last summer, started all but one game across his four-year run in Foxboro, Mass.
The reported swap marked a homecoming for Godchaux, who was born and raised in the Baton Rouge area and played collegiately at LSU. He’s set to join a Saints defense that allowed the second-most rushing yards and the sixth-most passing yards in the entire league last season. Godchaux will work under new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley and first-year head coach Kellen Moore.
The Patriots will have an opportunity to reunite with Godchaux in the coming months, as New England is scheduled to travel to New Orleans at some point in the 2025 regular season.
