The Red Sox are making moves.
Boston announced its first round of spring training cuts on Friday, optioning right-handed pitcher Luis Perales and outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia and reassigning left-handed pitcher Jovani Morán and right-handed pitchers Robert Stock, Brian Van Belle, and Jacob Webb to minor league camp.
Perales is perhaps the least surprising cut, as the current top pitching prospect in the system is currently recovering from Tommy John. The Red Sox aren’t expecting him back at any point this season, but they certainly are excited for his eventual return after he posted a 2.94 ERA in nine starts between High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland last season.
Garcia, who is also known as “The Password,” is another expected cut, having settled in at Double-A Portland after jumping three levels last season.
Stock was signed to a minor league contract this offseason, while Morán is also recovering from Tommy John. Van Belle and Webb are expected to serve in a relief role for Triple-A Worcester.
