Someone on the Red Sox had to make the joke after Boston’s Opening Day win, and Garrett Whitlock ultimately did the honors.

Whitlock took center stage in the Red Sox clubhouse after he was named “pitcher of the game” by Kristian Campbell, who was tasked with giving a speech and handing out a pair of individual honors following his MLB debut. Whitlock pitched a pair of scoreless innings in relief of starter Garrett Crochet, who allowed two runs over five innings in his first Boston start.

The veteran right-hander, who was limited to 18 1/3 innings last season due to injury, also was asked to say a few words after he received the nod from Campbell. The soft-spoken Whitlock unsurprisingly kept it brief but unleashed the quip all MLB fans love uttering after their favorite team wins on Opening Day

“We still got a chance to be 162-0,” Whitlock said, per a video shared by the Red Sox.

Whitlock and company will try to keep their undefeated dreams alive Friday night when they meet the Texas Rangers again at Globe Life Field. NESN’s complete coverage begins at 7 p.m. ET.
