It seemed like Wilyer Abreu would start the season on the injured list, but the Boston Red Sox outfielder made strides this weekend heading into Opening Day.

Abreu was sidelined through most of spring training while dealing with the aftereffects of a virus. The 25-year-old’s recovery took significant strides when he played in a minor-league game Friday, and the Gold Glove outfielder joined Rafael Devers in the lineup Saturday against Chris Sale and the Atlanta Braves.

“I was a little bit worried that the numbers (in lab work) weren’t going to get there sooner rather than later, but this is great news and now we just go,” Cora told reporters Friday, per The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey.

“Physically, everybody feels like he’s in a good spot. Now it’s just the at-bats. He can catch up. We know that.”

Abreu projects to be the starting right fielder for the Red Sox on Opening Day. He broke out last season when he hit 15 home runs and recorded 58 RBIs off a .781 OPS.
