Davon Godchaux appears on his way out of Foxboro
The Patriots could make additions via trade this NFL offseason, but New England also might take on the role of seller.
Mike Vrabel and company reportedly gave Davon Godchaux permission to seek a trade. The Patriots signed Godchaux to a two-year, $16.5 million extension in late July last year, but that’s now a tough contract to justify for a player who doesn’t naturally fit into the expected defensive scheme under the new regime in Foxboro, Mass.
So, what could New England land in a potential Godchaux trade? MassLive provided insight in a column published last week.
“Not a lot, according to a pair of executives in other front offices,” the report read. “One ballparked a fifth-round pick, while another believed Godchaux would only bring back a sixth or seventh-rounder. Both believed the 30-year-old’s age and a bloated contract would depress any trade value.”
At this point, New England might be content with any asset it could land in a trade for Godchaux. Draft capital — even picks in the late rounds — is at a premium for rebuilding teams, so the Patriots surely would be pleased to add to their treasure trove of selections.
As for transitioning from Godchaux, there’s been speculation New England could take an interior defensive lineman with the fourth overall pick.
