It appears that the Red Sox won't be squaring off against one of their favorite nemeses as they finish out this series against the Yankees.
The New York post reports that New York center-fielder Johnny Damon is out indefinitely after taking a Brad Penny offering off his leg in the first inning of Friday's 20-11 win over Boston. He won't be on the lineup card until he's done nursing a bruised knee.
When asked how long he'd be out of commission, Damon only told the Post, "No clue." He added that it was "very unlikely" he'd play on Saturday.
"It's swollen and bruised and it hurts," he said. "I guess I will deal with it, and hopefully I will be in the lineup soon."
It's probably for the better that the Red Sox won't have to deal with their former outfielder for the rest of the series: Against Boston in 2009, Damon is 13-for-54 with 10 RBIs and six home runs. He has gone deep in every series against the Red Sox this season. Overall, Damon is having a strong year, batting .284 with 22 dingers and 68 RBIs.
Another former Red Sox, Eric Hinske, replaced Damon for the remainder of Friday's game and went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs.
