Stewart Downing enjoys it, his teammates enjoy it, fans enjoy it and there is much more to come from Liverpool's expansive style of play. The 26-year-old midfielder told LFC Magazine that the Reds' attacking play is pleasing for fans and players alike and the goal gates will soon swing open.
"It's good to see the fans are enjoying watching the team play and the way we're trying to play," he said. "We're trying our best for them because they deserve it. I think fans watch football to be entertained. They want to see goals and forward players attacking. It's nice when you can do that.
"I think, particularly at home, we have done that this season. Our football has been good and long may it continue. We have been creating chances. I think there will be a day soon when we put all of them away and we'll have a big win against somebody."
Liverpool has played nine games so far this season and controlled the balance of play in all but two of them. They have out-passed and out-possesed the opposition, which has led to an advantage in the in-fashion statistical category called "chances created."
Many teams will look at the 15 goals Liverpool has scored in its nine games with envy. Players and supporters know that the Reds could have many more if they were more ruthless in front of goal.
It's common for teams to waste chances in the first month of the season, as players are still reaching their peak form. Now that it is October, that margin for error has eroded. Downing and supporters hope that the predicted goal burst will come on Oct. 15, when Liverpool hosts Manchester United.
